The Story Goes On...

World Song Contest .05

 Number of participants: 26

New participants: Brazil - Latvia

The fifth edition of the World Song Contest began on July 15th. Summer was there and one thing was going to be sure: this edition would be one of the hottest so far... With 26 countries, including new comers Brazil and Latvia, some thought the choice would be easier... The quality of the songs was this time so high that it was difficult to make a choice. The results, with several countries separated by only one point, showed it. For the first time, national finals were organised by some countries. This could be one of the explanation of the high quality as the best songs of each national final had to be chosen... For Serbia & Montenegro and Germany, this led to a top 5 position and a best result ever. But national final doesn't always mean success as Lithuania was once again forgot by the voters.

Lithuania is not the only one with a tragic destiny as Turkey came last for the second time on three participations. This time Turkish star Tarkan didn't manage to beat the 16th place he reached during the previous edition. O-Zone was also back for Moldova but had to satisfy with a lower position. They were not the only ones to come back this time as KariZma, who already finished 2nd in WSC .03, represented Bulgaria with a better destiny. They are one step away from Tose Proeski who holds the record with 3 participations for F.Y.R. of Macedonia. Other participants of this edition included Céline Dion, Backestreet Boys, Nena and Coldplay for the most famous ones.

But once again stars couldn't help to win the contest. Coldplay for the United Kingdom was close to make it. But after a perfect run and a hard fight against Russia, United Kingdom finished 2nd. So, just like the WSC Bettings predicted it, the race was won by Russia, which never achieved a top 20 position before. 31 votes were given, a record and the first time that all the participants voted, but only the last one during the live coverage of the results gave the victory to Letala Da Pela sung by Varvara.

THE WINNER

Country: Russia
Artist(s): Varvara
Song: Letala Da Pela

Varvara, a girl from Balashikha, situated near Moscow, didn’t like to study, but was forced to. But something makes her nostalgic – a music school, for instance, where she played accordion, though she graduated with bad marks. Or accordion, presented for 4-year old Varvara by her grandfather. Gladly Varvara went in for sports and danced, therefore she was responsible for organization of all morning and evening parties at school. Strange, she didn’t take interest in singing and almost entered the Institute of Light Industry. Fortunately, a key occurrence stopped her. Once in a local recreational center, where Varvara danced, she was coming by the door, where she usually heard terrible guitar sounds in AC/DC manner. But that day she heard masterly variation of Paganini and stuck to the door. Some moments later it was opened and the girl fell into the room. But perspicacious guys didn’t laugh: they instinctively felt, it was something serious after that gust and instantly arranged an audition. The next day she did’t go to the institute, but went to the rehearsal with that band. Several days later they unanimously decided Varvara had individual good lungs and something had to be done. During a month before matriculation, together with choir teacher, Varvara prepared a mini-program… and won a large entry, 12 people per place, to the music school of Gnesin after first voting. With such a great success she owed her teacher – director Matvey Osherovsky, who at first sight noticed an outstanding creative personality.  And after graduation, having cast aside all the prejudices, she went to sing to a pub. The first performance turned into disaster. After a time suddenly Varvara became a member of troupe of the State theatre of pop performances, headed by the master of domestic scene Lev Leschenko. At the same time the singer graduated from GITIS (Russian Academy of Theatre Art) in “pop artist” specialty. During several years she diligently toured with the theatre as a soloist – and sang the classics of soviet variety. After leaving theater Varvara starts her solo career. In 2001 "Nox Music company" issues her debut album with same title "Varvara". Works on this CD were being made through the whole year 2000. In the summer 2002 Vavara receives suggestion from founder of Swedish Cosmo studio Norm Bjorn to record some compositions with Swedish Symphonic Orchestra. That resulted in the song "Eto pozadi" (That is behind). Main passion of Varvara is experimenting with videos. In March 2003 her second album "Blizhe" (Closer) is issued by "Ars-Records". Most of the songs were recored at "Bratia Grimm" studio.  Varvara released another album, "Dreams", in 2005 which enjoyed much success in Russian.
