World Song Contest

when Music rules the World

The Story Goes On...

The 8th edition of the World Song Contest started in October 2005. The record of participants was not beaten but a qualifying round had to be organised as 34 countries, from all the continents, took part, including new comers San Marino and Norway. This time 7 countries were eliminated before the final. Estonia, Germany and USA were once again amongst them.

We also had a lot of famous names. If Mariah Carey didn't bring success to the USA, Alizée, Ricky Martin and Laura Pausini (representing Italy for the third time in a row) helped to qualify as well as artists related to the Eurovision Song Contest Ira Losco, Sakis Rouvas and Lena Philipsson. You can easily understand how good Russia did thanks to t.A.T.u. who belong to both of these categories. In final things were different for some of them and led to success for others. But without big names, and for the first time, Spain, Austria and France finished in the top 10 of the final. For Austria it's almost unbelievable as this country qualified because Macedonia didn't vote and thanks to a tie with Latvia in the qualifying round.

For it's first participation, Norway reached the top 10. The song received 12 points from 6 countries. But it was not enough to win. This time it was a battle between five countries. Probably that the difference was made by the popularity of t.A.T.u. who gave a second victory to Russia with the song Friend Or Foe. You can then expect more big stars in the future...

THE WINNER

Country: Russia
Artist(s): t.A.T.u.
Song: Friend Or Foe

Assembled by former TV-commercial producer Ivan Shapovalov after auditioning hundreds of candidates at Moscow's Mostfilm studios, t.A.T.u. (aka Taty) comprised Julia Olegovna Volkova (aka Julia Volkova; born 1985) and Elena Sergeevna Katina (aka Lena Katina; born 1984). Named after an internationally fashionable word, the teen pop duo delivered captivating melodies and controversial lyrics and signed up to Universal Music Russia on May 16, 2001. Their debut single, "Ya Soshla s Uma (I've Lost My Mind)," based on a story about a lesbian affair between two young girls, became their first smash, gaining international exposure through MTV. After issuing a second single called "Nas Ne Dogoniat (They Won't Catch Us)," their album 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane was released. 200 km/h didn't exactly catch fire when it was issued domestically in September 2002, though there was plenty of breathless ink spilled over Julia and Lena's Sapphic backstory. t.A.T.u. returned in 2005 with the album Dangerous and Moving, released in Russian and in English. Their third Russian album was released in 2008. An English version should be released in late 2009.

Lyrics

Is it too late?
Nothing to salvage
You look away
Clear of the damage
The meaning to
Our words of love
Has disappeared
We used to love one another
Give to each other
Lie undercover so,
Are you friend or foe

Love one another
Live for each other
So are you friend or foe
'Cause I used to know

The promises
Hollow concessions
And innocent
Show of affection
I touch your hand
A hologram
Are you still there?
We used to love one another
Give to each other
Lie undercover so,
Are you friend or foe?

Love one another
Live for each other
So are you friend or foe?
'Cause I used to know

Is it too late
Nothing to salvage
You look away
Clear of the damage
The meaning to
Our words of love
Has disappeared
We used to love one another
Give to each other
Lie under covers so,
Are you friend or foe

Love one another
Live for each other
So are you friend or foe
'Cause I used to know
