Officially, 41 countries is the record of participants of the World Song Contest. But that happened in WSC .16, when the contest had to face a scandal. This time 40 countries took part, and we can say it's the unofficial record for the reasons you know. No new countries joined this time, but several new players. It's always a surprise as no promotion is made for the contest. More people were asking for semi finals or a qualifying round but once again the players had to made a straight choice. 10 songs, and only 10.
Among the songs, we had, once again, some several hits. This contest showed us that the year of release might have an impact when it came to international hits. This time we had the United States of America and Italy. Evanescence, with their 2003 hit "My Immortal" and Italy with the 2006 hit of Tiziano Ferro. Portugal also achieved a good results in WSC .17 with an international hit, but this time, a song which was not seen as a dark horse finally reached Portugal's second best result with the 10th position. Germany also made a good come back, with a top 3 position. The best result so far for this country.
For other countries, it was the same destiny than in the previous editions. Bulgaria and Venezuela ended once again in the bottom five. Romania, after some good results when it entered the contest, was once again unable to find the magical formula despite being represented by one of the youngest "human" participants, if not the youngest, of all the editions.
Former winners came back, probably inspired by Varvara, the only singer who have won the contest twice, but none of them achieved a top 10 position. Brian McFadden ended 18th for Ireland, and Shiri Maimon ended 11th for Israel. It was their second attempt in the contest, far behind Tose Proeski who was back for the 5th time for F.Y.R. of Macedonia.
During the live coverage of the results, we had to wait until the last vote before we knew the winner of this edition. At that time, the USA were leading with 135 points, and Italy was 10 points behind. But Malta finally gave 12 points to Italy and nothing to the USA. This gave a first victory for Italy, with "Stop! Dimentica" performed by Tiziano Ferro.

* When there's a tie, the difference is made by the number of votes received by each country, or if it's not possible to decide a winner, by the number of 12 pts received (and so on untill we can make the difference)...
Tiziano Ferro was born in Latina on the 21st of February 1980. Since 2005 he moved to London. Following the brilliant results achieved at the high school, Tiziano enrolled at the university where he attended two different Faculties: one year in engineering and then information and communication sciences, both in Rome. Much better the results achieved with music: 7 years of classical guitar, 1 year of drums and 2 years of piano. In 1996, aged 16, he entered the local gospel choir, which helped him out in improving his vocal skills and pushed him to better know the black music. On the '96 - '97 two year period, he also attended a school of dubbing and worked as speaker in a couple of local radio stations. During the two following years he enrolled into the Sanremo Song Academy: the first year was a disaster as he didn't go further to the first week, while in 1998 he succeeded in getting one of the 12 finalists. Tiziano's performance attracted the attention of the producers Mara Majonchi and Alberto Salerno, who offered him a deal and started to work together; they teamed him up with several arranger until they finally found Michele Canova who is the one who finally understood and transformed Tiziano's ideas into the sought for sound. While the songs started to take shape, in 1999 Tiziano takes part to the Sottotono tour as a background vocalist. In 2001 Tiziano signed a deal with EMI and in July of the same year he released his first single ever: 'Perdono'. It skyrocketed to Number One in the Italian sales and airplay charts and stayed on top for 5 weeks. It went on to become Italy’s third best-selling single of 2001. The monumental pop breakthrough with this smash hit set the path for the release of his debut album 'Rosso Relativo' in October 2001. Upon release, it was hailed by both critics and fans alike as one of the year’s best records. And they were not wrong. The album debuted at Number Eight in the album sales chart and by that time the album’s second single was already a Top Five hit on radio. The album was released in most European countries including Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, UK,.... and his first single was also released in English, Spanish and French. Stop! Dimentica is taken from his third album, released in 2006.
