World Song Contest .27

 Number of participants: 50

New participants: Syria

50 countries from all the continents took part in the 27th edition of the World Song Contest. And, as a result, semi finals were organized. Something weird with them is that you always have a surprise when you compare them to the results of the final. If the United States of America won their own heat, and confirmed that result in the final, it was really different for Israel which took the first position of its heat but didn't reach the top 20 in the final. What happened ? Only players can tell. The same thing happened with other countries such as Slovenia or Bosnia & Herzegovina. Of course if it happens in that order, it also gave good surprises for other countries such as Venezuela which reached the top 10 in the final but only qualified for it by being 9th of its heat. The semi finals also gave us good surprise as some players who never qualified finally did it.

This edition of the World Song Contest gave us another good view of the battle that sometimes occurs between ballad lovers, pop lovers and those who like alternative music such has metal or trip hop. South Africa is a good example of that situation as 5 players gave their highest points to that song (all of them can be put in the alternative category), but it hardly received points after that, and none (or nearly) from ballad lovers. It has to be noticed that South Africa is the country which received the most 12 points.

This time Ballad lovers won the battle as only ballads reached the top 3. More: we can call these results "the opera time" as the gold and silver medals went to two artists with classical background (which you can easily hear in their voices). Maybe it was what people wanted to hear (or was it the post ESC thing with Slovenia and Latvia which qualified for the final of this contest with that kind of artists ?). Who knows ? The United States of America won the title for the second time, after Madonna won in WSC .09. Josh Groban and his "February Song" earned 139 points, 29 more than The Netherlands. Monaco came third with a song performed by Gregory Lemarchal who just died a few days before the contest started. Of course this edition of the World Song Contest is dedicated to his memory.

THE WINNER

Country: United States of America
Artist(s): Josh Groban
Song:
February Song

Pop and classical singer Josh Groban (born February 27, 1981) made his debut in the seventh grade, but then put music aside for a few years until he enrolled at the Interlochen Arts Program. In late 1998, he hooked up with a friend of his vocal coach, producer writer arranger David Foster. Groban worked for Foster as a rehearsal singer on a series of high-profile events, including the inauguration of Grey Davis as governor of California and the Grammy Awards (at which he rehearsed Foster's "The Prayer" with Celine Dion in place of Andrea Bocelli). He was accepted into the theater department of Carnegie Mellon University, but put his education on hold when he was offered a recording contract at Warner Bros. Records through Foster's 143 imprint. He made his recording debut singing "For Always" with Lara Fabian on the soundtrack to A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, and appeared in the 2001 season finale of the television series Ally McBeal. His debut album, Josh Groban, was released in November 2001. Over the next year, Groban became a star. His album went double platinum, and he had his own PBS special in November 2002. A month later, he performed "To Where You Are" and "The Prayer" at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, and joined the Corrs, Ronan Keating, Sting, Lionel Richie, and others for a holiday performance at the Vatican in Rome. In November 2003, Groban issued his second album, Closer. Two months later, he earned his first number one record when Closer skyrocketed from number 11 to the top spot on the Billboard album charts. In 2006, Groban released his third studio album, Awake, featuring guest appearances by the vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. The holiday-themed Noel appeared in 2007, with Awake Live following in 2008.
