Once again, more than 70 participants (73) took part in the 43rd edition of the World Song Contest, with Saint Kitts & Nevis and Quebec being represented for the first time. The participation of Quebec raised a lot of questions as it is not an independent country, but it must be said that, inside Canada, Quebec has its own music scene, and that it deserved to be represented in the contest under some conditions: the entries can only be performed in French. The first entry from Quebec managed to qualify for the final, where it ended 13th with 105 points. A good start. Greenland, which just like Quebec is not independent, came first in the final. Once again, votes from several Brazilian players made the difference as those who voted for Greenland usually didn't vote for the countries which ended in the top 5. But the question here is not about who voted for which song, but why do people choose songs they wouldn't vote for if it was chosen by someone else. Of course, players here try to give a general idea of the music from the country they represent, but what's the point of sending a song you don't necessarly like ? Winning the whole thing with a song you think people will vote for? Moment's Bliss, performed by Julie, is a pure pop song in the Eurovision Song Contest tradition, and yes we have ESC pop song lovers here... But once again, we have the occasion to hear that kind of songs once a year in a contest which is called Eurovision... and once again, so many other online contests find their happiness in that kind of songs... But WSC has shown us, for severaly years, that the ambitions were higher. So maybe there's not a magic formula to win, but at least you can try your luck with any kind of music because there's always a chance... Well maybe we should say there WAS a chance because things seem to have changed. That's why I ask you to dare things, not thinking about victory. Just send the songs that you really like even if you think it won't do well, don't send them to please someone else. And when you vote, maybe you should try to open your mind and ears to other kinds of music that the ones you usually listen to, you can have great surprise at the end. So Greenland came first, not only the song took the advantage over Belgium, which came second and received support from other french speaking countries, but also over the United Kingdom, which were represented by one of the best band in the world, and so is their music: The Verve. Germany came 4th, followed by India which achieved its best result ever. >> Your Comments
