59 countries took part in the 53rd edition of the World Song Contest. Lithuania and Lebanon made their come back. If Lithuania managed to qualify for the final, Lebanon will have to wai another edition to score another victory, after WSC .24. Among the big losers this time: UK and USA. This is the first time since WSC .10, and the third one overall, that the final had been played without the United Kingdom and the United States of America. One of these two countries, when not both, always made it to the final of the 50 other editions, the UK being there without interruption since WSC .36, making the top 10 on 10 occasions.

On the other hand, two countries reached their first top 10 position in this edition. Armenia's only appearance in a final was in WSC .39 and ended 14th. This time, for its 11th participation, Armenia did better, finishing 10th with 96 points. Vatican City's best result in WSC was a 23rd position reached in WSC .36, a record beaten in this edition as the song "Novembre" finished 8th.

It was another Italian song which was going to win the whole thing as Italy called back Il Genio, which already reached the 10th position in WSC .40 with "La Pathétique". This time the title of their song might sound X-Rated, but not for the voters as they decided that "Pop Porno" had to be the winner of this edition with 158 points. Winner of the semi finals, South Africa had to be happy with a second position, and Liechtenstein came 3rd.
