World Song Contest .54

 Number of participants: 57

New participants: -

57 countries took part in the 54th edition of the World Song Contest. F.Y.R. of Macedonia was one of the countries from the first edition, but usually collected some bad results, not to say one of the worst in the history of the contest. But history had to change. And we had the perfect song for that.

Some countries thought they had the best artist to represent them, as they already achieved a good result in the past, but coming back in the contest could be a bad decision. Sweden could dream of a victory after they received some help from Norwegian band Röyksopp, a former runner-up here. But they couldn't do better than a "disappointing" 7th position. On the other hand, Snow Patrol improved their results. After a 5th position in WSC .28, they did better with the 4th position (all this with the same amount of points).

After a great debut in the previous edition, in which the country ended second, Mali totally collapsed and finished last of the final. This is not an exception in this contest. Italy came last in WSC .53 after a victory in WSC .52. The same happened to New Zealand in WSC .51.

If history sometimes repeats itself, as we saw it, it sometimes gives some surprises. It was time for F.Y.R. of Macedonia to be rewarded but the road to a first victory was not that easy. Before becoming the first Macedonian song to win the contest, "120" performed by Foltin had to battle hard against Argentina and the Netherlands, but finally did it. Sometimes 4 little points are enough to change history...

THE WINNER

Country: F.Y.R. of Macedonia
Artist(s): Foltin
Song: 120

Foltin in short, is an unusual cast, whose music is hard to define, and every attempt to insert it into a musical genre would not be very successful. Foltin’s music is surreal, passionate and witty, characterized with a frantic dance atmosphere, which is achieved with the fast Macedonian rhythm. Even though they use standard musical elements, their approach in creating the atmosphere is unpredictable and above all, original. In their musical identity the Anglo - Macedonian hybrid, is a collision between the East and West. Their language is an imaginary mixture or phonetic imitation of the world languages like: Spanish, French, Romanian, Portuguese… Their “spontaneous Esperanto”. Foltin describe themselves as pseudo - emigrant cabaret, and often their concerts are turning into real performances. It is not a strange thing to imagine all that when you consider the fact that they have worked on a music for THEATRE PERFORMANCES, in which they are famous for using the ready-made “instruments” or creating ambient sound with objects from unmusical primer function, construction of some kind sculptures and installations. They took part in many musical and theatre FESTIVALS in Macedonia, Croatia, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, France and they have been awarded for their work many times. The group exists since 1995 and so far they have published five albums.
