World Song Contest .59

 Number of participants: 53

New participants: Haiti - Zimbabwe

Among thez 53 participants of World Song Contest .59, Haiti and Zimbabwe made their first appearance. Both managed to qualify for the final. At that time, Haiti made the headlines after an earthquake devastated the island. Did this tragedy help the country to collect some votes ? We will never know, but Haiti emerged as the runner-up of the competition.

Europe is usually the continent with the best results. But this time none of the songs of the top 4 came from European countries. In fact, only 7 entries of the top 20 were European. America did the same but had only 10 songs in the competition. The rest of the top 20 was composed as followed: 3 from Asia, 2 from Oceania and 1 from Africa.

The first time Israel won was in WSC .14. Since then the country realised some good results, but never won again. It was time for Efrat Gosh to change things with her song "Ah Ah Ah". She scored 126 points, 8 more than Haiti and 16 more than China.

THE WINNER

Country: Israel
Artist(s): Efrat Gosh
Song: Ah Ah Ah

Efrat Gosh is a popular Israeli singer. Gosh was born and raised in Herzliya, Israel where as a middle child with a younger and an older brother she became influenced by the jazz music of Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. Gosh's music career began when some friends asked her if she could record a demo with Yoni Bloch whom had written it for Nurit Galron (a famous Israeli singer). She agreed and a week later was asked to sing backing vocals in Bloch’s shows. The decision to join the show turned out to be an important one, as Bloch and Gosh looked to the audience and saw head of the Hebrew Department of the major Israeli music label NMC at the time, Chaim Shemesh, with whom Yoni Bloch signed at the time. Shemesh, with a history of discovering and nourishing talented stars like Aviv Geffen, Eifo HaYeled, HaKhaverim Shel Natasha, HaYehudim, Eviyatar Banai and many more artists, was so impressed by the backing vocalist that he went on to sign a contract with her as well. After a long period of having a strictly professional relationship, Gosh and Shemesh have developed a romantic relationship which seems to have ended in 2009. She released her third album in 2010.
